Position Summary, Job Requirements & Responsibilities

Iridium is seeking a talented and motivated Junior Data Scientist to join our System Performance & Analysis team. In this role, you will utilize your data modeling and analysis skills to help the team understand and analyze business and data requirements. Your primary focus as a Junior Data Scientist will be assisting with the analyses of Iridium’s system data, validation of post process data, and generation and management of system reports and metrics. You will be ideal in this role if you thrive in a fast-paced and ever-evolving environment and can be flexible, collaborative, and adaptable to shifting priorities.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist with data analysis, including using a variety of tools to query major databases
  • Assist in the evaluation and approval of data for validity
  • Support the team’s responses to internal data inquiries
  • Assist with mining data from primary and secondary sources and reorganizing data into formats that can be easily read by either human or machine/application
  • Use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytics efforts
  • Assist with preparing reports for executive leadership that effectively communicate trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data
  • Collaborate with programmers, engineers, and organizational leaders to identify opportunities for process improvements, recommend system modifications, and develop policies for data governance
  • Help create documentation for presentation to stakeholders
  • Use graphs and other methods to visualize data

Job Requirements

  • Must be a critical thinker and can “think outside the box”, especially as it pertains to challenging the status quo
  • Must have an interest in developing, tuning, and executing efficient data queries from a variety of sources (databases and raw data)
  • Must have a general understanding of data analysis skills and SQL skills
  • Must embrace teamwork and collaboration, especially in a cross functional environment
  • Ability to occasionally work independently on routine work assignments and have a sense of ownership in work products
  • Must be a natural problem solver with solid work ethic and time management skills
  • Must have strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Must be proficient with MS Office tools, including Word and PowerPoint; advanced knowledge in Excel (i.e., pivot tables, importing/exporting, formulas, etc.) is highly desired

Experience & Education Requirements / EEO

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Data Analytics, Computer Science, or related program is required
  • Previous exposure via college courses or internships to the following are required:
    • Data science
    • Data analytics
    • Intermediate to advance Microsoft Excel functions
  • General knowledge of SQL required
  • Previous experience with testing and data validation is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of MySQL and MongoDB is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of database design/data modeling is a plus
